The Pitt Market - Granton

The Opportunity
S+Co was engaged by The Pitt, Edinburgh’s pioneering street food market, to design their new home within an old industrial storage unit in Granton after their original Leith site was sold.
As a charity with a strong community focus, they aimed to create more than just a food market - they envisioned a dynamic cultural hub featuring an outdoor sauna, a 700-capacity flexible event space, and a strong connection to local youth development projects.

Our Response
S+Co worked closely with The Pitt team to design a flexible, multi-functional space that would meet their immediate needs and allow for future expansion. The proposed concept preserved the market’s signature raw, industrial aesthetic while improving visitor flow, trader facilities, and overall functionality.
As a charity, The Pitt has a limited budget but a strong commitment to sustainability, and S+Co’s design prioritised repurposed materials and modular elements that could evolve alongside the venue. The interior of the main market is constructed using reclaimed Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), a carbon-negative material that minimises waste and sequesters carbon. By coordinating the available CLT panels off-site, construction time and environmental impact will be further reduced.

The scope has since expanded, with The Pitt team now overseeing the entire warehouse and surrounding land. Future plans include a community bakery, artist studios, and an outdoor skate ramp. S+Co continues to guide the client through the design and statutory application processes, viewing the project as a long-term partnership and one we are very proud of.
The venue is now partially open with The Pitt bringing their ambitious vision to life piece by modular piece.
