AN ISLAND EXPERIENCE
The award recognises excellence in architecture for completed projects located outside the EAA Chapter area, designed by architects working within it — celebrating work that takes an Edinburgh-based practice’s ideas and expertise further afield.
For S+Co, Na Bothain is a particularly meaningful project to be recognised in this way. Designed from our Edinburgh studio and delivered on the remote Isle of Raasay, the project brought together architecture, interiors and hospitality design to extend the distillery’s visitor experience into the landscape.
SHAPED BY LANDSCAPE
Set on a steeply sloping hillside overlooking the Sound of Raasay towards the Cuillin mountains, the site presented a significant architectural challenge. Rather than imposing a conventional arrangement, we developed a masterplan that follows the natural contours of the hillside, allowing the cabins to step down the landscape while maintaining privacy, views and a strong connection to their surroundings.
The architecture takes its cues from Scotland’s traditional bothies, reinterpreted as contemporary spaces for staying, slowing down and experiencing the island. Two cabin typologies create a varied rhythm across the hillside, from intimate pitched-roof cabins for two to larger mono-pitch cabins with private saunas, outdoor bathing spaces and generous decks.

MADE FOR restoration
Na Bothain was designed as more than a collection of cabins. From the masterplan and architecture through to interiors, bespoke furniture and detailing, S+Co shaped the complete guest experience.
Inside, restrained materials, tactile finishes, Hebridean textiles and carefully framed views create spaces that feel warm and connected to their surroundings. The result is deliberately quiet: architecture that allows the landscape to remain the defining experience.
Since opening in October 2025, Na Bothain has helped establish a new accommodation experience for the distillery and contributed to Isle of Raasay Distillery being named in The Times Top 50 Places to Stay in the UK 2026.
We’re proud to see the project recognised alongside some of the region’s leading architectural work, and look forward to celebrating with the other shortlisted practices at this year’s EAA Awards.
