According to the Global Wellness Institute, the wellness tourism market, valued at around £520 billion in 2022, is set to reach nearly £1.1 trillion by 2027. Wellness trips are growing faster than tourism as a whole, and spending by wellness travellers consistently outpaces that of regular tourists.

We began by delving into the history of the place itself. Old Town Chambers is not one building, but four - The Mile, Warriston’s, Advocate’s and Roxburgh - each with its own story and character. Centuries-old buildings, some dating back to the 15th century, stand alongside sleek, state-of-the-art penthouses, all connected by the cobbled closes, time-worn steps and meandering closes off the Royal Mile. The idea of layers - of stone and story - became the foundation of the refreshed brand. Working with the ownership and Marriott teams, we developed the defining concept ‘Uncover the Unexpected’, expressing both the physical experience of descending through the closes and the emotional sense of discovery that defines a stay here. The logo was redrawn from this narrative, inspired by the steps and strata that shape the Old Town’s landscape.

The success of Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire shows just how powerful this approach can be. Opening in 2015 with 40 cabins, the exclusive estate added a further 20 huts in 2022, driven by almost constant demand, with occupancy rates close to one hundred percent. By blending rustic charm with modern design and layering in wellness facilities such as spa and natural bathing, they have created an experience people are eager to replicate.

So why are cabins so uniquely suited to this kind of offer? The answer lies in their intimacy and their ability to immerse guests in nature. Research consistently shows that time spent in natural environments reduces stress, lowers anxiety and helps restore mental focus. Even short exposure to green space can have measurable effects on mood, blood pressure and recovery from mental fatigue. At Dunsinnan Estate in Perthshire, The Cabin at Fairygreen Farm blends our signature contemporary architecture with bespoke features such as the outdoor bath and firepit, creating special moments of indulgence for guests. While at Raasay Distillery, we created Na Bothain - compact, beautifully designed cabins where guests can stay overnight as part of their whisky journey. Not only do they extend the visitor journey, they also open up a valuable new revenue stream, while staying true to the island’s landscape and the brand’s storytelling.

Planning regulations differ by location but approvals are generally far simpler to secure for these movable, temporary structures compared with permanent buildings of a similar size.
