Our client wanted Kiltane’s stores to stand out on London and Edinburgh's busy streets - not by shouting, but by raising the bar on quality and customer experience.

our response

We began by refreshing the interiors of Kiltane’s Lawnmarket store, near Edinburgh Castle, establishing initial strategies around flow, visibility and brand presence through our hospitality-led approach to retail. From here, we moved onto a larger project at the St Giles flagship store, where those principles were scaled up - focusing on elevating the brand, hero product display, and customer experience.

Alongside reconfiguring the layout of the existing three-storey shop, an opportunity emerged to extend the brand experience into a neighbouring property. Recognising the value of introducing a hospitality element, we explored several concepts before developing Café Kiltane.

Café Kiltane was conceived as a space for shoppers and passers-by to pause and enhance their connection with the brand.

customer journey

The two units were connected with new structural openings, allowing the café space to flow naturally into retail, while new staff and storage areas were created at basement level.

To improve the retail journey, we also reworked the spatial plan of the shopping floors to create a more intuitive customer experience. Pigeonhole shelving and hidden stock gave way to modular, tactile displays and clear, well-lit layouts, while previously obscured windows were opened to maximise views into and out of the store.

a confident evolution

Throughout, the interior was softened and elevated: timber panelling, warm lighting, and a richer material palette create a calm, premium atmosphere that frames products without overpowering them. Externally, we refreshed the façade with new signage, canopies, and a bold brand flag, presenting the store more confidently to the Royal Mile.

The result is a flagship that redefines Kiltane’s retail presence, establishing a design system and spatial strategy adaptable across sites.

a growing presence

The same approach has since been carried into Kiltane’s London store at 65 Great Russell Street, which opened in late 2025.

Positioned on a prominent corner opposite the British Museum, the Bloomsbury store brings the brand’s signature retail experience to the capital.

As the third location we’ve delivered together, the project continues our shared focus on calm, considered retail environments - spaces where clarity, flow and material warmth allow the product to take centre stage.

While building on the principles established in Edinburgh, the design responds to its London context, demonstrating how Kiltane’s evolving retail identity can flex across locations while maintaining a consistent sense of quality and character.
