Holon is a new holistic wellness centre in Glasgow's West End, offering innovative health and wellness technologies designed to "guide clients towards optimal health". A first of its kind in Scotland, Holon provides a wide range of services from hyperbaric treatments, infrared saunas, ice baths and toxicology testing to mind-body and breathwork classes.

As a new proposition and business within the wellness sector, this inaugural location for Holon needed to reflect its alternative ethos and create an impactful first impression.

our response

Founder, Josh Fields, had a small budget with which to convert a tired and dated shop unit on Great Western Road, but as a new proposition in the wellness sector, this inaugural location needed to create an impactful first impression.

S+Co worked through space planning with Josh and his team, creating a central reception area with treatment and consultation rooms on ground floor, a yoga studio on a restructured mezzanine level, and a spa with sauna and ice plunge in the basement.

We began by delving into the history of the place itself. Old Town Chambers is not one building, but four - The Mile, Warriston’s, Advocate’s and Roxburgh - each with its own story and character. Centuries-old buildings, some dating back to the 15th century, stand alongside sleek, state-of-the-art penthouses, all connected by the cobbled closes, time-worn steps and meandering closes off the Royal Mile. The idea of layers - of stone and story - became the foundation of the refreshed brand. Working with the ownership and Marriott teams, we developed the defining concept ‘Uncover the Unexpected’, expressing both the physical experience of descending through the closes and the emotional sense of discovery that defines a stay here. The logo was redrawn from this narrative, inspired by the steps and strata that shape the Old Town’s landscape.

The new logo's stacked, architectural form evokes the verticality of the city and the layered stories of the Chambers - a symbol that feels crafted, confident and distinctly Edinburgh

DESIGNED FOR WELLNESS

Materials had to be cost effective, but still in line with Holon's wellbeing ethos. Hard corners in the main space were smoothed out to create soft, flowing curves, finished with natural clay plaster.

Cork flooring and wall cladding was used throughout to create warmth underfoot and to improve acoustics internally. Simple folded mild steel was used to overclad an existing staircase, and to to create a new reception desk, detailing carefully developed with local specialist fabricators, Old School Fabrications.

A natural colour palette and reference to circadian rhythm within the lighting system and window installation, also tied in with the wider brand.

The space reflects the balance that Holon seeks to strike between science, wellness and technology.

A HOLISTIC SERVICE

S+Co was also responsible for signage and wayfinding, external facade design, MEP coordination, lighting and loose furniture specification, as well as the art direction and production of photography and film assets - reflecting the space, people and services on offer - for use on the website and external platforms.

A holistic service for a holistic product and one that the client is delighted with, Josh describing the space as, "a beautiful oasis in the heart of the city where people tend to feel at ease the moment they walk in.”

Our interior design work on this unique project was recognised with a Gold award at the 2025 Scottish Design Awards.
